Yes--the screwdrivers definitely seemed to be a nod in the right direction, but I was surprised about the rest. Like you, I'd always figured that the Doctor was different because he'd only ever met himself in other incarnations.
I suppose Amelia is an alternate version, if we stretch? Because she's only an alternate the first time, right? She doesn't actually meet 11 for the first time after all the "new" stuff happens, so does she really count as alternate? (Ouch, timey-wimey makes my brain hurt!)
The meta-reason is probably because writing stories where people can interact freely with past and future versions of themselves is more fun.
Could also be because it wasn't convenient, which is a bit lame. (Speaking of which, I'm not altogether sure why he didn't regenerate, either...)
