I haven't watched a Confidential since S2, but I really must this time. Am slightly disappointed that your namesake was abandoned, though (do they address that decision?).
The funny thing is the two screwdrivers cause a spark when their time differential shorts out, but nothing happens with Amy and Amelia, or the two instances of the Doctor. He's been able to physically interact with other incarnations, but I always had this notion that didn't apply to moments when a given regeneration encounters himself.
I suppose you could put the Amelias down to young Amelia being an alternate version, who wouldn't count for purposes of the limitation effect.
The meta-reason is probably because writing stories where people can interact freely with past and future versions of themselves is more fun.
Yes--the screwdrivers definitely seemed to be a nod in the right direction, but I was surprised about the rest. Like you, I'd always figured that the Doctor was different because he'd only ever met himself in other incarnations.
I suppose Amelia is an alternate version, if we stretch? Because she's only an alternate the first time, right? She doesn't actually meet 11 for the first time after all the "new" stuff happens, so does she really count as alternate? (Ouch, timey-wimey makes my brain hurt!)

Could also be because it wasn't convenient, which is a bit lame. (Speaking of which, I'm not altogether sure why he didn't regenerate, either...)

Amelia in the museum was definitely an alternate, because her universe had no stars in it. Amelia who the Doctor finds in the garden was the "real" Amelia because history was reforming.
(Speaking of which, I'm not altogether sure why he didn't regenerate, either...)
He seems to be getting in practice at staving off death by Dalek laser. This time, he held off long enough to crawl back to the Pandorica. That's how I envisioned it.

Ah, forgot about her. So are we to presume that she DID actually meet him pre-snoozing-on-suitcase-in-garden? I need to watch this one again to clarify these things, methinks.

Actually, since you mention it, we had Ten's whole Farewell Tour between Lethal Dose O' Radiation and regeneration, which was far more ridiculous than this--though I thought here that he was *actually dead* pre-Pandorica. Except then he moved. Crap. It's all too jumbled in my head, just ignore the madwoman in the corner talking to herself and counting on her fingers...
I think it was half fake-out, half deathly torpor. He appears, falls down the stairs, tells his past self to make like he's dead, gathers his strength while Rory and Amy briefly protest, then crawls off to the Pandorica.
And yes, a second viewing helps. I watched the episode a second time tonight, albeit out of a reluctance to get up to hit stop after watching the timey wimey portion.
I hate to admit it but I cried. Bless all the great people who made this series, especially Steven Moffat. I love you all. And if you're a Whovian, I love you too. Unless you wear a fez. @_@
